Path of Exile 2: Glossary of Core Mechanics and Deprecated Path of Exile 1 Terms
abril 19, 2025 | by Admin
This document provides a glossary of key terms and mechanics specific to Path of Exile 2 (PoE2), based on information available as of April 19, 2025. It aims to define core concepts relevant to PoE2 gameplay. A separate section follows, detailing significant terms and mechanics from Path of Exile 1 (PoE1) that have been removed or fundamentally altered in PoE2, intended to clarify differences for players familiar with the original game.
Path of Exile 2 Core Terminology and Mechanics
This glossary defines terms based on their implementation within Path of Exile 2.
Gems and Skills
- Skill Gem: An item that grants an active skill when socketed into the character’s skill panel. Characters must meet level and attribute requirements to use the skill. Skill gems possess their own sockets for Support Gems.1 They can be leveled up using Uncut Skill Gems.1 Up to 9 skill gems can be actively bound by default.1
- Support Gem: An item socketed directly into a Skill Gem (or skills granted by items/Ascendancies) to modify its effects.1 Each skill gem starts with two support sockets, expandable up to five using Jeweller’s Orbs.1 Only one copy of any specific Support Gem can be used across all skills on a character, unless specific passives allow otherwise.1 The total number of support gems of a specific attribute colour (Red-Strength, Green-Dexterity, Blue-Intelligence) usable by a character is limited by their corresponding attribute score (5 points per gem socket).1 Support gems primarily add utility or modify mechanics rather than solely providing raw damage multipliers.2
- Spirit Gem: A special type of skill gem, created using an Uncut Spirit Gem, that grants persistent effects such as Auras, permanent Minions, or triggered abilities.1 Activating a Spirit Gem requires reserving a portion of the character’s Spirit resource.1 Spirit Gems can be supported by Support Gems, often increasing their Spirit reservation cost.1
- Meta Gem: A type of gem that interacts with other socketed gems, often triggering linked skills based on specific conditions.2 Meta Gems typically reserve Spirit to function.3 An example is Cast on Charm Use, which triggers linked spells when a Charm is used.4
- Gem Sockets (on Skills): Sockets are located directly on Skill Gems (and skills granted by items/Ascendancies), not on equipment.1 These sockets hold Support Gems that modify the skill. Skill gems start with two sockets, and more can be added using Jeweller’s Orbs (Lesser, Greater, Perfect) up to a maximum of five support sockets.1 All sockets on a gem are inherently linked.6
- Uncut Gem: A currency item used to create a specific type of gem (Skill, Support, Spirit, Meta) or to level up existing Skill Gems.1 Engraving an Uncut Gem creates a gem matching the Uncut Gem’s level.1
- Gemcutting: The process related to creating and leveling gems, likely involving Uncut Gems.1 Specific mechanics are not detailed in provided sources, but it relates to obtaining and upgrading gems.8 Gemcutter’s Prisms improve gem quality.9
Passive Skill Tree
- Passive Skill Tree: A large network of passive skills where players allocate points earned through leveling and quests to customize their character.11 Features Dual Specialization, allowing some points to be allocated to weapon-specific sets.11 The tree is broadly divided into Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence themed areas.11
- Passives (Minor Nodes / Travel Nodes): The most common nodes on the tree. Travel nodes grant a choice of +Strength, +Dexterity, or +Intelligence.11 Other minor nodes provide small statistical bonuses (e.g., increased Fire Damage, increased Energy Shield) and act as pathways to Notables and Keystones.11 Refunding attribute travel nodes costs 50% less Gold.11
- Notable Passive Skills (Notables): More powerful nodes found at the end of passive skill clusters, providing significant bonuses or unique effects.11
- Keystones: Foundational passive skills, often located on the outer edges of the tree, that fundamentally change character mechanics, usually offering a powerful benefit with a significant drawback.11 Examples include Chaos Inoculation (Life becomes 1, immune to Chaos Damage).13
- Attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence): The three core attributes influencing character capabilities. They are prerequisites for equipping gear and using gems.2 Each attribute provides inherent bonuses: Strength grants Life 14, Dexterity grants Accuracy 15, and Intelligence grants Mana.16 Attributes also determine the capacity for using coloured Support Gems (5 points of an attribute allows one support gem of that colour).1 Travel nodes on the passive tree allow choosing which attribute to gain.11
- Dual Specialization / Weapon Specialization: A PoE2 system allowing players to allocate some passive skill points specifically to one of two weapon sets. These passives become active only when the corresponding weapon set is equipped.11 Skills can be assigned to automatically swap to the appropriate weapon set and activate its specialized passives.11 This encourages using multiple skills and weapon types within a single build.2 Points for specialization are acquired during the campaign.11
Combat and Damage
- Attack: A skill type that uses the character’s equipped weapon(s) (or unarmed state) to deal damage.19 Base damage, attack speed, and critical strike chance are typically derived from the weapon.19 Attacks require Accuracy to hit targets with Evasion.15 Can be Melee or Ranged.
- Melee: An attack performed at close range, typically using weapons like swords, axes, maces, etc..11 Often involves skills tagged with Melee or Strike.1
- Ranged: An attack performed from a distance, typically using bows, crossbows, or wands.13 Often involves skills tagged with Projectile.1
- Spell: A skill type that is cast, rather than swung or fired like an attack.22 Spells inherently cannot be evaded and do not use Accuracy.15 Their base damage and cast speed are determined by the gem itself, not the weapon (though weapons can provide spell-related stats).22
- Damage over Time (DOT): Damage inflicted gradually over a duration, rather than instantly with a hit.23 DOT effects do not hit and are therefore not affected by mechanics like Accuracy, Evasion, or Block.23 They are mitigated by Resistances corresponding to the damage type.23 Examples include Bleeding, Poison, and Ignite.24
- Ailments: A family of debuffs, typically associated with specific damage types.16 The main damaging ailments are Bleed (Physical), Poison (Chaos/Physical), and Ignite (Fire). The main non-damaging ailments are Chill (Cold), Freeze (Cold), Shock (Lightning), and Electrocute (Lightning).25 Application chance and effect often scale with damage dealt relative to the target’s Ailment Threshold.25
- Bleed (Bleeding): Deals Physical damage over time (15% of hit’s Physical damage per second baseline).16 Deals double damage if the target is moving or the bleed is Aggravated.16 Bypasses Energy Shield in PoE1, but in PoE2 can be applied even when hitting ES (as of patch 0.2.0e).25 Base duration 5 seconds.16 Requires an explicit source of Bleed chance.16
- Poison: Deals Chaos damage over time (20% of combined Physical and Chaos damage of the hit per second baseline).25 Requires an explicit source of Poison chance.25 Stacks applied by multiple hits deal damage concurrently.24 Base duration 2 seconds.25 Poison damage ignores Energy Shield.27
- Ignite: Deals Fire damage over time (20% of hit’s Fire damage per second baseline).25 Chance to Ignite and magnitude scale with Fire damage dealt.28 Base duration 4 seconds.25 Only the strongest Ignite applies damage at any time.24
- Chill: Slows the target’s action speed (movement, attack, cast speed).16 Applied by Cold damage hits, magnitude scales with damage up to a 50% slow cap.16 Base duration 2 seconds.16
- Freeze: Prevents the target from moving or taking actions.25 Applied when sufficient Cold damage buildup occurs.25 Base duration 4 seconds.25
- Shock: Increases damage taken by the target from all sources (20% increased damage taken baseline).25 Chance to Shock scales with Lightning damage dealt.16 Base duration 4 seconds.25
- Electrocute: Causes the target’s action speed to drop to 0, effectively immobilizing them.25 Applied by Lightning damage buildup via specific sources (e.g., Electrocute Support).31 Replaces Shock application.31
- Damage Types: The categories of damage dealt by skills and effects. Mitigated by corresponding Resistances or Armour (for Physical).16
- Physical: Base damage type, mitigated primarily by Armour.13 Associated with Bleeding.16 Can contribute to Poison.25
- Fire: Elemental damage type, mitigated by Fire Resistance.30 Associated with Ignite.28 Often linked with Strength themes.11
- Cold: Elemental damage type, mitigated by Cold Resistance.16 Associated with Chill and Freeze.16 Often linked with Dexterity themes.11
- Lightning: Elemental damage type, mitigated by Lightning Resistance.16 Associated with Shock and Electrocute.25 Often linked with Intelligence themes.11
- Chaos: Non-elemental damage type, mitigated by Chaos Resistance.16 Bypasses Energy Shield (Poison DOT) or deals double damage to it (Chaos hits).27 Associated with Poison.25 Chaos Resistance is generally harder to obtain.27
- Area of Effect (AoE): Skills or effects that impact a region rather than a single target.34 Can be circular, conical, or other shapes.34 Modifiers increase or decrease the size of this area.35
- Projectiles: Objects created by skills that travel along a trajectory and can hit targets.36 Can have behaviors like Piercing (passing through targets), Forking (splitting on hit), Chaining (redirecting to nearby targets), or Returning.36
- Accuracy: A rating used by Attacks to determine the chance to hit a target, checked against the target’s Evasion rating.15 Dexterity grants Accuracy (+5 per point).15 Spells do not use Accuracy.15 Chance to hit is capped between 5% and 100% by default, but can exceed 100% with specific mechanics (e.g., Amazon notable).15 Accuracy decreases with distance.15
- Critical Strikes / Critical Hit: A hit that deals bonus damage based on the character’s Critical Damage Bonus (Crit Multiplier in PoE1 terminology).40 Chance to critically strike is determined by the skill/weapon’s base crit chance and modifiers.40 Critical hits from attacks can be downgraded to normal hits by the target’s Evasion check.39 Player base critical damage bonus is +100% (200% total damage).41
- Stun (Light/Heavy): An effect that interrupts a target’s action and prevents further actions for a duration.33
- Light Stun: Short duration, high frequency. Chance based on hit damage relative to target’s max Life (100% base chance at 100% max Life damage). Chances below 10% are ignored.33 Physical and player Melee damage have 50% more chance (multiplicative).33 Players cannot be Light Stunned while raising a shield.42
- Heavy Stun: Longer duration, occurs when a target’s Stun bar is filled by damage buildup.33 Players and minions are normally immune but can gain Heavy Stun buildup from specific actions (e.g., blocking with shield raised, parrying).33 The “stagger” from blocking too much damage is now considered a Heavy Stun.42
Defense and Recovery
- Defences (Armour, Evasion, Energy Shield): The three primary passive defensive stats found on equipment.43
- Armour: Mitigates incoming Physical damage from hits.13 Associated with Strength.13 Provides diminishing returns against larger hits. Armour Break debuff reduces its effectiveness.26
- Evasion: Provides a chance to avoid incoming Attack hits (Strikes and Projectiles).39 Checked against the attacker’s Accuracy.39 Uses an entropy system to prevent long streaks of hits or misses.39 Also provides a secondary check to downgrade critical hits to normal hits.39 Associated with Dexterity.13 In PoE2, Evasion also applies to non-AoE spell hits from monsters.39
- Energy Shield (ES): An additional hit point pool layered on top of Life.45 Absorbs all types of damage except Chaos hits (which deal double damage to ES) and Poison DOT (which bypasses ES).27 ES regenerates automatically via Recharge after not taking damage for a period.45 Associated with Intelligence.13 Grants a 50% chance to ignore Stun while active.45
- Resistances (Elemental, Chaos): Reduce incoming damage of a specific type by a percentage.46 Capped at 75% by default, hard capped at 90%.46 Can become negative, increasing damage taken.46 Players incur penalties to Elemental Resistances as they progress (total -60% by endgame).46 Elemental Resistances cover Fire, Cold, and Lightning.30 Chaos Resistance covers Chaos damage.30
- Block: A chance to completely negate the damage from an incoming Hit (Attack or Spell Projectile/Strike).42 Primarily gained from Shields, Staves, or Dual Wielding.42 Capped at 75% by default, hard capped at 90%.48 Does not prevent non-damaging effects like ailments or stuns from the blocked hit.42 Some boss skills are unblockable unless specific modifiers are present.42 Active blocking (raising shield/parrying) guarantees blocks from the front but builds Stagger/Heavy Stun.42
- Dodge Roll: A baseline movement ability bound to Spacebar allowing the character to perform a quick roll.49 Has no cooldown or resource cost.49 Grants stun resistance during the roll and avoids projectiles/melee attacks at the start of the animation, but does not grant invulnerability.49 Cancels skill animations.49 Roll speed scales with Movement Speed.49 Can be modified by passives (e.g., distance, pass through enemies, avoid all hits with downside).49 Cannot be used if the Unwavering Stance keystone is taken.49
- Life: The primary health pool of the character. Reaching 0 Life results in death.14 Base life increases with character level and Strength (+2 per point).14 Primarily increased via gear affixes (‘+# to maximum Life’, ‘% increased maximum Life’).14 Recovered via Flasks, Regeneration, Leech.14
- Mana: The primary resource used to pay the cost of activating skills.2 Represented by the blue orb.17 Base mana and mana per level contribute, along with Intelligence (+2 Mana per Int).16 Recovered via Flasks, Regeneration, Leech, etc..17
- Spirit: A resource pool used exclusively for reserving persistent skills like Auras, permanent Minions, Buffs, and Meta Gems.1 Starts at 0, increased primarily through specific quest rewards (up to 100 total) and certain item types (Sceptres, Body Armour, Amulets).3 Not used for active skill costs.2
- Recovery: The general term for regaining Life, Mana, or Energy Shield.52 Common methods include Regeneration, Leech, Recharge (ES only), and Flasks.52 Modifiers can increase the rate or amount of recovery (e.g., increased Life Recovery Rate).54
- Leech (Life, Mana, Energy Shield): Recovers Life, Mana, or ES over time based on a percentage of damage dealt by a Hit.56 Creates leech instances that recover resource up to a cap per instance (e.g., 10% of max life default) and a total cap per second (e.g., 20% of max life default).57 Instances are removed when the resource pool is full.56 Requires specific stats like “% of Damage Leeched as X”.57
- Regeneration (Life, Mana): Automatic recovery of Life or Mana over time, expressed as a flat amount per second or a percentage of the maximum per second.14 Occurs constantly unless interrupted by specific effects.58
- Recharge (Energy Shield): The inherent recovery mechanism for Energy Shield.45 Begins automatically after a delay (default 2 seconds) of not taking any damage.45 Recovers a percentage of maximum ES per second (default 33.3%).45 The delay and rate can be modified.45 Interrupted by taking damage.45
Items and Crafting
- Item Rarity (Normal, Magic, Rare, Unique): Defines the number and type of modifiers an item can possess.6 Normal (white) items have no explicit mods. Magic (blue) items have up to 1 prefix and 1 suffix. Rare (yellow) items have up to 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes. Unique (orange/brown) items have fixed, unique modifiers.6 The absence of Orb of Scouring elevates the importance of Normal bases for crafting.6
- Implicit Modifiers: Baseline stats inherent to an item’s base type, present on all rarities of that item.59 Cannot be changed by standard crafting orbs.59 Examples include resistance on rings or block chance on shields.42
- Explicit Modifiers / Affixes (Prefix, Suffix): Stats added to Magic and Rare items via crafting or identification.6 Divided into Prefixes (max 1 on Magic, 3 on Rare) and Suffixes (max 1 on Magic, 3 on Rare).6 Available affixes depend on item base type and item level.6
- Item Level: Determines the potential tiers of explicit modifiers an item can roll.6 Higher item level allows access to more powerful affix tiers.61 Crucial for crafting high-end gear.61
- Base Types: The fundamental item template (e.g., Vaal Regalia, Harbinger Bow).6 Determines implicit mods, attribute requirements, base defenses, and influences the available explicit mod pool.6 Finding the right high-item-level base is critical, especially given the lack of easy crafting resets.6
- Currency Orbs (PoE2 Relevant): Items used to craft and modify equipment and gems. Key examples include:
- Scroll of Wisdom: Identifies items.6
- Orb of Transmutation: Normal -> Magic (1 affix).6
- Orb of Augmentation: Adds 2nd affix to Magic.6
- Orb of Alchemy: Normal -> Rare (4 affixes).6
- Regal Orb: Magic -> Rare (+1 affix).6
- Exalted Orb: Adds affix to Rare (<6 affixes).6 More common than PoE1.62
- Orb of Annulment: Removes random affix.6 Very rare.62
- Chaos Orb: Removes 1 random affix, adds 1 random affix.6 (Functionally different from PoE1).
- Divine Orb: Rerolls affix values.6
- Vaal Orb: Corrupts item unpredictably.6
- Jeweller’s Orb (Lesser, Greater, Perfect): Adds sockets to Skill Gems.6
- Orb of Chance: Normal -> Random Rarity (Magic/Rare/Unique).6
- Quality Currency (Scraps, Whetstones, Etchers, GCPs): Improves item quality.9
- Flasks (Life Flask, Mana Flask): Recover Life or Mana over time.63 Only one of each type can be equipped.63 Use charges gained primarily from killing monsters.63 Can be Magic or Unique rarity with modifying affixes.63 This system replaces PoE1’s 5-flask system, with utility functions moved to Charms.64
- Charms: Accessories equipped in dedicated slots, providing automatic utility effects (ailment removal/immunity, buffs) when specific conditions are met.66 Use their own charge system.66 Replace PoE1 Utility Flasks.65 Can be Magic or Unique.67
Character
- Classes: The starting archetypes chosen by the player (e.g., Warrior, Sorceress, Huntress).5 PoE2 features 12 classes, two for each attribute combination (e.g., Witch and Sorceress for Intelligence).11 The starting class determines the initial position on the Passive Skill Tree and minor variations in starting nodes.11
- Ascendancy Classes: Specializations for each base class, unlocked by completing Ascension Trials.70 Each class has 3 Ascendancy options (though not all may be available initially), providing powerful, build-defining passive skills via a dedicated Ascendancy Skill Tree.5 PoE2 aims for 36 total Ascendancies.5 Ascendancy choice can be respecced by re-completing a relevant trial and having points unallocated.70
Other Mechanics
- Minions: Allied creatures summoned by the player to fight alongside them.73 Include spectres, zombies, skeletons, golems, etc. Permanent minions typically reserve Spirit.1 Benefit from player stats that specify “Minion” or “Ally”, support gems linked to their summoning skill, and auras.73 Have their own stats and defenses.73
- Totems: Allied stationary constructs placed by the player that use skills.75 Use the player’s stats for their skills but have their own defensive stats (life, resistances).75 Subject to a Totem Limit, which can be increased.75 Gain elemental resistances based on gem level.72
- Traps: Devices thrown by the player that trigger when an enemy enters their proximity, deploying a linked skill.77 Have a duration, arming time, and trigger radius.77 Subject to a trap limit.77 Use player stats but are considered the source of the skill effect.77 Can be damaged by AoE.77
- Mines: Devices placed by the player that must be detonated remotely to use a linked skill.77 Note: While Mines are a core PoE1 mechanic and often paired with Traps, specific PoE2 implementation details beyond the Trap/Mine/Totem interaction 77 are less detailed in provided snippets. Assume functional similarity unless stated otherwise.
- Warcries: Skills that provide buffs based on the power (number and rarity) of nearby enemies.79 Often taunt enemies and empower subsequent attacks.80 Have cooldowns and use time modified by Warcry Speed.79
- Buffs: Beneficial effects applied to a character or monster, typically temporary, indicated by a green border icon.82 Can increase stats, grant abilities, or provide recovery.83 Examples include Auras, Flask effects (in PoE1), Onslaught, charges.82 Buffs of the same type generally do not stack; the strongest applies.83
- Debuffs: Detrimental effects applied to a character or monster, indicated by a red border icon.82 Reduce stats, apply damage over time, or hinder actions.82 Examples include Curses, Ailments, Exposure.46
- Curses: A category of powerful debuffs that weaken targets.84 Can reduce resistances (e.g., Flammability), lower damage output (e.g., Enfeeble), slow actions, or apply other penalties.46 By default, only one curse can be active on a target, but this limit can be increased.84 In PoE2, applied curses have a delay before taking effect.84
- Auras: Skills that grant persistent buffs to the caster and nearby allies, or apply debuffs to nearby enemies, within a radius.87 Typically reserve Spirit in PoE2.1 Examples include Determination (Armour), Haste (Speed), Purity of Elements (Resistances).88
- Presence: Refers to an area around the character (base radius 4 metres, formerly 6m) where certain effects apply to or check for enemies or allies.34 Used by some skills, Ascendancy nodes, or item effects (e.g., “Enemies in your Presence count as being on Low Life”).14 Presence Area of Effect can be modified.34
- Reservation (Spirit): The mechanic by which Spirit Gems (Auras, permanent Minions, Meta Gems) lock away a portion of the character’s Spirit pool to maintain their effect.1 Replaces Mana reservation from PoE1.3 Reservation amounts can be flat or potentially modified by support gems or passives.1
- Corrupted: A state applied to an item (usually via Vaal Orb) or gem that prevents further modification through most crafting methods.6 Corruption applies a random, unpredictable outcome, which can be beneficial (e.g., powerful implicit modifier, extra socket, increased gem level/quality) or detrimental (e.g., turning item rare with bad mods, no change).6 Corrupting gems can increase their level beyond 20 or add/remove sockets/quality.92 Corrupting Waystones is a primary method to obtain higher tiers.92
Deprecated Path of Exile 1 Terms / Mechanics Removed or Replaced in PoE2
This section clarifies key terms, currency, and mechanics from Path of Exile 1 that function differently or are confirmed absent in Path of Exile 2 as of April 19, 2025. This is intended to prevent confusion for veteran players.
- Chromatic Orb:
- PoE1 Function: Used to reroll the colours of sockets on equipment.93 Essential for matching socket colours to gem requirements.
- PoE2 Status: Removed/Obsolete. Sockets are now on gems themselves, and all gem sockets are effectively “white,” accepting gems of any colour.93 Support gem colour limitations are now based on character attributes.1
- Orb of Fusing:
- PoE1 Function: Used to randomly re-link sockets on equipment.6 Achieving 5 or 6 linked sockets often required significant currency investment.
- PoE2 Status: Removed/Obsolete. Sockets are on gems, and all sockets on a gem are automatically linked.6 The process of linking items is no longer necessary.
- Orb of Scouring:
- PoE1 Function: Removed all explicit modifiers from a Magic or Rare item, returning it to Normal (white) rarity.95 Crucial for resetting crafting attempts or preparing bases.
- PoE2 Status: Removed (at least temporarily).6 This significantly changes crafting dynamics, making Normal bases more valuable and failed crafts harder to recover from.6
- Orb of Alteration / Alteration Shard:
- PoE1 Function: Orb of Alteration rerolled modifiers on Magic items.96 Alteration Shards were obtained from vendoring identified items and combined into Orbs of Alteration.99 Widely used for basic crafting and rolling specific mods on Magic items before using a Regal Orb.96
- PoE2 Status: Removed.93 Rerolling Magic items is no longer possible in the same way. Crafting Magic items involves Orb of Transmutation (adds 1 mod) and Orb of Augmentation (adds 2nd mod).6 The Chaos Orb’s new function (remove 1 mod, add 1 mod) offers a different form of modification.6
- PoE1-Style Utility Flasks (Quicksilver, Granite, Jade, Basalt, Diamond, Bismuth, etc.):
- PoE1 Function: Provided temporary but powerful buffs to movement speed (Quicksilver), defenses (Granite/Armour, Jade/Evasion, Basalt/Phys Reduction), resistances (Bismuth), critical strike chance (Diamond), or other effects.65 Often kept active constantly in endgame builds (“flask piano”).65
- PoE2 Status: Removed/Replaced by Charm system.64 PoE2 only allows one Life Flask and one Mana Flask.63 The utility functions (ailment removal, temporary buffs/defenses) are now handled by Charms, which trigger automatically based on conditions and use their own charge system.65 This eliminates “flask piano” but removes player agency in manually activating these buffs.65
- Mana Reservation (PoE1 System):
- PoE1 Function: Auras and other persistent buffs reserved a percentage or flat amount of the character’s Mana pool, making it unavailable for casting skills.88 Managing mana reservation alongside skill costs was a core aspect of build planning.
- PoE2 Status: Replaced by Spirit Reservation.3 In PoE2, Auras, permanent Minions, and Meta Gems reserve Spirit, a separate resource pool gained through quests and specific gear.3 Mana is now used solely for active skill costs.2
- Labyrinth Trials / Labyrinth for Ascendancy:
- PoE1 Function: Players had to find and complete six different Trials of Ascendancy scattered throughout the campaign acts to gain access to the Lord’s Labyrinth. Completing the Labyrinth (Normal, Cruel, Merciless, Eternal difficulties) awarded Ascendancy points.102
- PoE2 Status: Removed/Replaced by Ascension Trials (Trial of the Sekhemas, Trial of Chaos).70 These are endgame activities accessed via specific items (e.g., Balbala’s Barya, Inscribed Ultimatums) that grant Ascendancy points upon meeting certain conditions (e.g., completing floors/trials).70 Ascendancy points can be earned incrementally, and respeccing the chosen Ascendancy is possible under specific conditions.70
- Specific Ascendancy Classes (Examples):
- PoE1 Function: Many Ascendancies existed in PoE1 with unique themes (e.g., Hierophant – Totems/Mana, Pathfinder – Flasks, Elementalist – Golems/Elemental conflux).
- PoE2 Status: Many PoE1 Ascendancies are removed or have their themes significantly altered or redistributed.106 PoE2 introduces new classes (like Huntress, Monk, Mercenary) and entirely new Ascendancies (like Ritualist, Amazon, Smith of Kitava, Lich, Tactician).54 While some thematic overlap might exist (e.g., a Witch Ascendancy focusing on minions), the specific mechanics and names are largely different.107 For instance, Hierophant’s totem focus might move to Druid or Marauder, mana themes to Sorceress, and Pathfinder’s flask identity is replaced by the universal Charm system.107
- Damage Conversion Order:
- PoE1 Function: Damage conversion followed a strict linear path: Physical -> Lightning -> Cold -> Fire -> Chaos.32 Damage could not be converted backward or skip steps directly (e.g., Phys to Fire was possible, but Chaos to Lightning was not). Modifiers to the original damage type could still apply after conversion.32
- PoE2 Status: Conversion order restriction removed.108 Damage can be converted from any type to any other type directly.108 Importantly, converted damage no longer scales with modifiers to the original damage type, only the new type.32 This simplifies scaling but removes some multiplicative stacking possibilities from PoE1.
- Gem Sockets on Equipment:
- PoE1 Function: Equipment (Body Armour, Helmets, Gloves, Boots, Weapons, Shields) contained sockets where Skill and Support Gems were placed.109 Linking these sockets (using Orbs of Fusing) was necessary for Support Gems to affect Skill Gems.109 Socket colours (using Chromatic Orbs) determined which colour gems could be placed.93
- PoE2 Status: Removed/Replaced by Sockets on Gems.1 In PoE2, Skill Gems themselves have sockets for Support Gems.1 All sockets are inherently linked and colourless (“white”).6 Equipment no longer has gem sockets (though items like Unset Rings might grant skills directly).2
This glossary provides a foundation for understanding the core systems of Path of Exile 2 and highlights key departures from its predecessor. As the game evolves through Early Access and towards full release, specific details and mechanics may be subject to further change.
